Over 200 Pair, Collected and Delivered to Bali!

On
October 18, 2006, 250 pairs of uv-protected sunglasses
were donated to the fisherman of the village of Lipah,
Bali. I Made Liter Aduyana, head of the Lipah Fisherman's
Association said, "Dear Mrs. Sha'ari and friends,
thank you a lot for this donation. It will be very useful
for us." In typical Balinese fashion, the sunglasses
were blessed by a local priest prior to distribution.
Sha'ari Garfinkel of Seattle,Washington was moved to
begin this collection after visiting the area in May.
She noticed that many young fisherman developed cataracts
prematurely. "When
I asked why they didn't wear sunglasses, I was told they
couldn't afford them and couldn't buy them there." That's
when she decided to do something. She had just attended
the Quest for Global Healing Conference in Ubud, Bali
and was motivated to take on an important but manageable
project.
Thanks to many people in Seattle who donated sunglasses
or funds to purchase sunglasses for the fisherman, 250
pair were collected. Then, a colleague of Ms. Garfinkel's,
Franci Pease announced that she would help transport the
glasses to Bali. Franci was one of 15 people from Seattle's
Center for Spiritual Living who carried the sunglasses
in their luggage during their recent trip. Then, she gathered
up the glasses and brought them to Bali's capital city,
Denspasar. From there, Sha'ari was able to enlist the assistance
of Marcel and Unieng Luitze, hotel owners in Lipah who
have an apartment in Denpasar and make frequent trips between
locations. Mr. Luitze said, "It's our pleasure to
give assistance in these type of charity actions."
Sha'ari hopes to continue this sunglass collection project, helping to prevent
cataracts throughout other fishing villages in the rural area of Amed, Bali.
